Community Activities

  1. National Museum of Natural History (www.mnh.si.edu). Also stop by to see:
    • The Discover Room – a hands on exploration of the museum objects.
    • Orkin Insect Zoo – Lots of critters for little ones to explore. You can even watch the tarantulas being fed (eeeek!) (at 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30), and nowhere else will your kids see a better collection of cock roaches, bees and ants!
  2. National Arboretum: It is a hidden treasure often missed. You can walk, bicycle or drive on the many winding roads in the National Arboretum. There is an area with picnic tables for lunch options. www.bep.treas.gov
  3. Bureau of Engraving and Printing: Kids (and adults) seem fascinated by the money printing process, as well as the destruction of old money. Closest metro is the Smithsonian. www.bep.treas.gov
  4. The Newseum: New location in DC! Your kids can actually perform on camera and deliver the news or the weather! Under age 6 is FREE! Closest Metro is Gallery Place or Smithsonian. www.newseum.org
  5. Reston Zoo: Reston, VA. A great place to get close and actually play with pigs, deer, monkeys and goats-1228 Hunter Mill Road, Vienna, VA 22182. www.restonzoo.com
  6. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA: So many planes to see! Your kids will love it! www.nasm.si.edu
  7. Great Waves at Cameron Run: 4001 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA (703) 960-0767. A great place for our little fish! This place has a wave pool, three-flume waterslide, water playground, lap lanes, bathhouse, snack bar, and raft rental. Other attractions in the area include a miniature golf course, batting cages, picnic shelters, and a lake. www.nvrpa.org
  8. Clemyjontri Park: A great park/playground for children of all ages and needs! If you haven’t checked it out, it’s a must see! 6317 Georgetown Pike McLean, Virginia 22101. www.fairfaxcounty.gov
